Even though online shopping growth quickly over the last decade, for most of the brands, brick-and-mortar stores still contribute the majority of revenue. In an online environment, every single movement by a customer can be measured and optimized, while in an offline environment, only the POS data is collected. We did some interesting experiments using wifi and Bluetooth technologies to collect offline data and help brick-and-mortar stores to know, understand and reach their customers, just like their online counterparts.

Dr. Danfeng Li is a seasoned technology leader with 15+ years’ experience of applying machine learning and data mining to real world problem, leveraging big data in a variety of areas including structure and unstructured search, rank and relevance, behavioral targeting and online advertising, retail and marketing, credit/debit card and online banking fraud detection, and risk management. He is currently the Chief Data Officer and Chief Scientist of Umeng+, Alibaba Group. Before he joined Alibaba, Dr. Li was a principal development lead in Microsoft. He also worked at Opera Solutions, Yahoo and Fico. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and bachelor degree from Tsinghua University.
